White Roses for an Eternal Bond

White Roses for an Enternal Bond

May 13, 2012

There is a song, White Rose of Athens, sung by Nana Mouskouri, and with its haunting lyrics, it was one of my mother’s favorites.

"So goodbye my love till then

Till the white rose blooms again"

I had been living in Athens Greece for six years, and it was from there that I sent my mother the first gift of white roses as a “Mother’s Day” gift.  But I sent it on my birthday. In my early twenties, I came to the realization that my birthday was not only about me being born on that day.  The special day was also about my mother, who had given me the most wonderful gift of all... life! How can it be that Mother’s Day and Birthdays have been so unnaturally “separated?”

I wanted Mom to know that even though it was my birthday, my thoughts were also about her. The note that I included in that first bouquet read, “I have never thanked you for bringing me into this world. I would like to do that now with these white roses from Athens”. Every year after that first gifting, the white roses, the symbol of our eternal bond, were sent to her on my birthday, and needless to say that each time she was genuinely touched and loved the gesture.

Just six short years after this birthday tribute started, my mother was taken away from me forever. Now I could never again send those beloved roses to her. With her passing, we were once again separated, at least until we meet again.

"The summer days are ending in the valley

And soon the time will come when we must be apart

Now you must start your journey to the sailing

And leave me till another spring-time comes around"

Why don’t we avoid the Hallmark cliché for Mothers Day and create more personal gifts linking our birthdays with Mothers day? And why don’t we all evolve from the concept of “birthdays” to focus as much on the mother giving birth as the child being born? Let us not forget the eternal bond between mother and child.

"So goodbye my love till then

Till the white rose blooms again"

Mom has been gone for many years now, and in place of those roses, I light a candle for her on my birthday every year. Silently, I thank her for giving me life.

"Goodbye till then

Goodbye till then..."

Since i know it will be an eternity or never when i get a response to my note to the help desk, i just wanted to point out a glitch to the DA staff.

When i went to submit my entry, the timer said i had roughly an hour left. I had refreshed the page too when i was almost done. (shouldn't have needed to anyway)

However, it would not let me submit to that category when i tried. The timer was suddenly at 0. As i was uploading, it said i had close to an hour left.

This also happened to  SmoochiLuci  You guys owe it to us to accept our entries because of this big error on DAs part.

Attention, attention! This is a very important message. Read thoroughly!

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement has just been published, and it is going to substantially threaten DeviantArt's life and future. This deal is dangerous for DeviantArt because of its intellectual property enforcement chapter, whose provisions could destroy this site's mission, which is to "[create] the cultural context for how [art] is created, discovered, and shared," and "to exhibit, promote, and share their works with an enthusiastic, art-centric community." On a larger scale, the TPP would also destroy the careers of nearly every artist who posts works on this site.
The TPP's intellectual property chapter includes provisions that could censor the Internet, endanger online privacy, impose draconian copyright standards, abolish freedom of expression, criminalize whistleblowing, and rob the public domain. Internet service providers could be held liable for hosting copyright infringement, and they could also be forced to become private copyright enforcers, forced to take down, filter, and block content with only a private notice from the copyright holder. So, under the TPP's provisions, DeviantArt could be shut down and its users and staff could be treated like criminals.
The TPP would push for the widespread use of Digital Rights Management software, or DRM, to prevent consumers from tinkering with devices or content for purposes that corporations fear will infringe their copyrights and patents. Consumers could be prevented from unlocking their mobile phones to change telecom carriers, and prevent documentary filmmakers and other artists from breaking encryption on DVDs or sampling online streaming videos, where legal threats could be faced even if the video is created legally. People with visual or reading disabilities could be prevented from changing the formats of books and movies to make them more accessible. Not only unauthorized content, but also unauthorized software, could be blocked under the TPP's digital locks provisions. There is NO EVIDENCE that DRM does much to combat copyright infringement or protect consumers from viruses. All DRM does is suppress companies that promote innovation, criminalize sharing, and hinder and break the Internet and new technologies.

This is an emergency. You need to take action before this extreme pact can be implemented. And if the TPP is implemented, our right to share, modify, and experiment with content and technology could be faced with overly severe restrictions. As such, this site could be brought to its end, once and for all.

You can help stop the TPP by signing the below petition:

Hi there random deviantartist! I just want to offer you something... a hug. Glomp! Hug Huggle! Tight Hug
You deserve it! Forget all those pansy chains that say you need (insert
number) of hugs to be truly loved, all you need is ONE person to show
their appreciation for you to know that you are beautiful and of amazing
worth! I just want you to know that no matter what, you are important
to me, you deserve a smile on your face, and happiness in your heart.
Have a very, very splendid day/night wherever you are!
